Pantry Basics

This list is a general guide for the items that I consider standard pantry items, but depending on your personal needs and tastes, you don’t need every item on hand to be successful in the kitchen.  If something on the list contains an allergen, I have suggested an alternative that you can try.  Most items are shelf-stable, unless otherwise noted.  It is a good idea to write the date on the package/bottle when you open the item (or buy a bulk item) so you know if it is fresh or not.

Baking Supplies:

  • Baking powder
  • Baking soda
  • Chocolate (unsweetened, semisweet, chips)
  • Cocoa Powder (both dutch and regular)
  • Yeast
  • Sea Salt (I prefer the pink sea salt in bulk –  if it isn’t finely ground enough for what I’m cooking I toss it into a mortar/pestal)
  • Organic Cornstarch (Buy organic and avoid the GMO controversy)
  • White Vinegar
  • Flours – unbleached wheat, whole wheat; Gluten-free flours I have on hand:  GF Co-op Baking Mix (note – the Co-op’s GF Baking mix is made with Bob’s GF flours, but our kitchen is not certified GF – we do take every precaution to avoid cross-contamination!)  Sorghum Flour; Rice Flour (both brown and white); Potato Starch/Flour, Almond Flour,   Arrowroot Powder and Xanthan Gum.  All of these should be kept in the refrigerator.
  • Organic Sugar (brown, cane/beet, powdered; agave syrup if you need a low-glycemic sugar)
  • Evaporated Milk
  • Sweetened Condensed Milk
  • Organic Vanilla Extract
  • Honey
  • Organic Maple Syrup

Fats:

  • Organic Vegetable Oil
  • Organic Extra Virgin Olive Oil
  • Organic Shortening (I like the Spectrum brand)
  • Butter/Margarine (depending on your preference and dietary needs)
  • Organic Toasted Sesame Oil
  • Spray Oil (Canola or otherwise)

Grains/Beans:

  • Organic Short Grain Brown Rice (GF)
  • Organic Long Grain White Rice (basmati is most versatile) (GF)
  • Organic Oats (you can buy Bob’s Red Mill GF Oats)
  • Arborio Rice (GF)
  • Couscous (I prefer the Israeli)
  • Organic Quinoa (GF)

Spices/Condiments: (spices are good for about six months in a cool, dark location)

  • Organic Soy Sauce (I prefer Nama Shoyu; Tamari is the WF option, or you can substitute Braggs Aminos in some recipes)
  • Bay Leaves
  • Dried Rosemary
  • Dried Oregano
  • Dried Thyme
  • Onion Powder
  • Garlic Powder
  • Granulated Garlic
  • Black Pepper
  • Ground Cinnamon
  • Cayenne Powder
  • Dry Mustard
  • Hot Sauce
  • Balsamic Vinegar

Other Handy Supplies:

  • Hot Sauce
  • Panko/GF Breadcrumbs (I prefer Glutino brand)
  • Organic Beef Stock (refrigerate after opening)
  • Organic Chicken Stock (refrigerate after opening)
  • Organic Chicken Broth (refrigerate after opening)
  • Phyllo Dough
